Jolie’s Shinju with Ronnie Stewart aboard ran the 2000m in 2min 0.2secs and has become the 14th winner of the Derby sponsored by the Emirates and the first mare to win the Derby since Showgirl V in 1973, and from a future perspective, has all but booked her ticket to the Group 1 Tattersalls Cox Plate (2040m) in Melbourne in October.
“I hope she can now go for the Cox Plate,” said her emotional owner, prominent liver surgeon Dr Tan Kai Chah after the race.
“She ran a very good time, which was not all that far from the SIA Cup time (1min 59.2secs). I think she can measure up in Australia.

“She’s the best horse I’ve ever trained. I was confident she could run 2000m and she didn’t let me down,” said Takaoka.
“I thought she might have gone a little bit too fast at one stage, but when I saw Ronnie still had plenty underneath him, I knew she would be hard to catch.
“Cox Plate? Yes, yes, I think she will go for it.”

Laurie Laxon said runner-up Big Maverick had run a great race after being snagged back at the start by Prebble from his extreme outside draw.
“It was Prebble’s plan to ride him that way,” said Laxon. “There probably wasn’t a lot more he could do and under the circumstances it was an excellent effort.
“In any other year he probably wins the race. Nothing can be taken from mare. She is all class and thoroughly deserves this victory.
