Italian prizes slashed
by Racing Post Staff
ALL four Italian classics have been cut in value by ten per cent and three of them have also been downgraded in Pattern-race terms.
As the pound has strengthened against the euro, their prizes are going to look considerably less attractive to British raiders.
The Premio Parioli (2,000 Guineas), to be run on April 29, and the Premio Regina Elena (1,000 Guineas),
which follows on May 13, will now be Group 3 races.
The Oaks d’Italia, which will be run in company with the Gran Premio di Milano on June 17,
has lost its Group 1 status. It will now be a Group 2 event.
Only the Derby Italiano, to be run on May 20, remains at last year’s Group level.
Italy will now have eight Group 1 races in 2007 but only four Group 2 prizes.
However the Premio Ambrosiano, for older horses over 1m2f in April, has been restored to the list of Group 3 events.
