新高多芬練馬師 Charlie Appleby 獲BHA 發牌

Charlie Appleby was licensed today by the British Horseracing Authority to train for Godolphin.

Simon Crisford, the Godolphin racing manager, commented: "Charlie has been with Godolphin for nearly 15 years and worked his way up to the top.

"He has always been a tremendous asset to Godolphin and we are looking forward to him making a huge success of his training career."

Appleby is delighted with his new role and thanked Sheikh Mohammed, Godolphin's founder and driving force, for the position which involves being in charge of up to 200 racehorses.

The 38-year-old said: "I am very fortunate and I cannot thank Sheikh Mohammed enough for giving me this opportunity."

"My main way of repaying Godolphin will be by producing winners and good horses.

"The team will be doing their best to build on all the success Godolphin has achieved and go forward."

He takes over responsibility for Moulton Paddocks in Newmarket, England, and Marmoom Stables in Dubai as one of Godolphin's two main trainers alongside Saeed bin Suroor.

Appleby explained: "We already have a great team in place at Moulton Paddocks".

"Hopefully, we will be able to find Group One horses. There are some nice two-year-olds who have broken their maidens but now have to step up."

Appleby was born on July 5, 1975 in South-West England. His parents, Andrew and Patricia, were based near Plymouth in Devon and kept ponies and Arab horses, with his mother breeding and racing the latter.
He was introduced to point-to-pointers when 12 and then rode work for trainers Angela Knight and Jackie Retter. He wanted to be a jockey and embarked on a nine-week course at the British Racing School in Newmarket at the age of 16.

Appleby has been connected ever since with the Suffolk town, the headquarters of British Flat racing.

He rode out at Susan Piggott's yard in Newmarket and subsequently was offered a job.

He soon became travelling head lad as well as race riding on the Flat as an amateur.

There were two big advantages to working at Eve Lodge - increasing responsibility and the chance to ride on the gallops alongside legendary jockey Lester Piggott, Susan's husband.

Appleby recalled: "Lester would never say very much but I was very lucky that I got on well with him and Susan.

"Just learning from someone as great about pace and how races should be run was a tremendous experience.

"Newmarket was a completely different environment for me - a hive of activity - horses, horses and more horses".

He remained with Mrs Piggott until she retired from training in 1995. After a temporary spell with renowned two-year-old trainer David Loder, Appleby was offered a permanent post there as second travelling head lad.

Dubai Millennium, Godolphin's greatest performer, started out with the Newmarket trainer as a two-year-old.

Loder was appointed Godolphin's private handler of two-year-olds in late 1998 and moved his operation to the former Evry Racecourse near Paris in France.

The experience was invaluable for Appleby, who gave up riding in the mornings and was placed in charge of one of six barns and organising exercise schedules, in addition to his travelling duties.
"What I learnt at David's was attention to detail. There are lots of very professional stables but his attention to detail in all aspects of training was second to none."

Loder returned to Newmarket after two years in France and Appleby went to Dubai for the first time in the winter of 2000 to break in two-year-olds for Godolphin at Desert Stables, next to Al Quoz. Each year since has been split between Newmarket and Dubai which he has enjoyed seeing expand so much.

Appleby stayed with Loder, acting as a head lad as well as travelling horses, that year and returned to Dubai during the winter to break in more youngsters.

The 2002 season was his last with Loder, who decided to become a public trainer again. Appleby was asked to remain with Godolphin and be involved with the main training set-up run by Saeed bin Suroor.
He started out travelling horses all around the world, with a notable triumph being Crimson Palace's Grade One victory in the Beverly D Stakes at Arlington Park, Chicago, in 2004.

"Working closely with the amazing team of people at Godolphin is exceptional - thanks to the high quality of personnel within the organisation.

"If you allow yourself to, you learn so much just from listening to people with such great knowledge.
"I also met many people when going around the world with the horses. You pick up so many little bits of knowledge and how you use them depends on each horse as an individual."

He acquired greater responsibility as time went by.

"After more than a year and a half of travelling for Saeed, I was asked if I would be one of the assistant head lads and progressed to yard manager/head lad as the stable got bigger.

"I stepped up again with Saeed in 2007 and became assistant trainer in Dubai, looking after the Carnival horses. I spent two Carnivals in that role and it was a successful time.

"In 2009 I teamed up, as head lad at Moulton Paddocks, with Mahmood Al Zarooni, when he first arrived in Newmarket and was an assistant to Saeed. Mahmood was appointed a Godolphin trainer in March, 2010, with me as his assistant."

Appleby recalled his best recent times with the most international of all stables.

"Godolphin has won many races on Dubai World Cup night but Monterosso's victory in the 2012 World Cup was the best for me. From the position I am in at the moment, all I want to do is to try and repeat that experience.

"Blue Bunting was memorable too. We had her as a two-year-old and what she did as a three-year-old was fantastic. There were great hopes of her turning into a nice middle distance filly but we did not foresee her winning the 1000 Guineas as well."

The new trainer likes dealing with two-year-olds, and especially fillies.

"I would not want to say I prefer working with fillies than colts - they are just two totally different types to train.
"The colts are like naughty schoolboys and you have to educate and structure them to become racehorses.
"If you treat fillies with a kind hand and be patient, they will give you more."

He is married to Aisling, who works for Godolphin Internet, and the couple have young twin daughters.
"I have been brought up with horses and I only know one thing - to get up in the morning, go to work and see horses all day. Racing is what I live and breathe."

There are no doubts in Appleby's mind about becoming a Godolphin trainer.

"Taking on this role as one of the faces of Godolphin, I am very lucky in knowing Godolphin inside out.

"I am not afraid of the extra responsibility and have great support from everybody within Godolphin."
