Dao Dao, one of the rising stars, has been retired and will be returned to competition in Australia under trainer John Hawkes.:gggg:
Owner Lee Kwai-sang told trainer John Size, and confirmed in an e-mail to the South China Morning Post, he believes Dao Dao "is not good enough" for Hong Kong and he'll be replaced by another horse he has bred.
Size and jockey Douglas Whyte believed Dao Dao could measure up to the very best milers next season, but in the wake of his disappointing but unlucky run in the Champions Mile Lee was not convinced and made his shock decision to pull the gelding out.
Size said he tried to reason with the owner, assuring him of his personal belief Dao Dao would be a worthy top-grade performer next term, but to no avail.
Lee told of a "feeling of guilt" when he watched Dao Dao winning easily under topweight of 133 pounds at his previous run on April 6.
"I don't want to ask them to keep on running faster until they break down," Lee added.
The owner said Dao Dao, together with his Hong Kong-Macau Trophy winner Slow Waltz, would be "let back to nature for a nice holiday" before joining the Hawkes team.
Hawkes was the original trainer of Dao Dao, with the gelding racing three times in Sydney for two wins and a second to subsequent Group One winner Sniper's Bullet.
