Profile – Richard Gibson
Chantilly, France based Trainer Richard Gibson, now 41 years of age, left England at an early age to pursue a career as a horse trainer. After travelling to America in order to enhance his skills working under prominent Trainers Gary Jones and Bill Mott of CIGAR fame, Mr Gibson returned to France where he became an assistant to leading French Trainer Pascal Bary for 2 years before commencing to train in his own right. In 1997, at the age of just 27, Mr Gibson was granted his initial Trainer’s licence by France Galop and commenced training at Chantilly.
Mr Gibson achieved Group 1 success in 1999 when he prepared LADY OF CHAD to win the Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp. LADY OF CHAD also recorded victories in the 2000 Prix d’Astarte (Group 2) as well as the 2000 Prix de la Grotte (Group 3) which earned her the title of Champion European filly of her season. In all, he has prepared the winners of 6 Group 1 races including MAROTTA in the 2002 Prix Saint Alary, Longchamp and LUNE D’OR in the 2004 Darley Lydia Tesio at La Campanelle Rome.
His most prominent Group 1 performer has been the outstanding stayer DOCTOR DINO which he trained to win consecutive renewals of the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Vase (Group 1) in 2007 and 2008. Mr Gibson campaigned DOCTOR DINO successfully over a number of seasons during which the horse also captured the 2007 Group 1 Man O’War Stakes at Belmont Park, USA as well as the 2008 Grand Prix de Chantilly (Group 2) and 2006 Prix Andre Baboin (Group 3) in Bordeaux.
Having held a Trainer’s licence for some 14 seasons, Mr Gibson has prepared in excess of 500 winners including the winners of 7 Group 2 races which include MAROTTA in the 2002 Prix Lydia Tesio, Rome; CUT QUARTZ in the 2002 Prix Kergorlay, Deauville and the 2003 Prix Comtesse de Vigier, Longchamp as well as LUNE D’OR in the 2004 Prix Pomone, Deauville and the 2004 Prix Malleret, Saint-Cloud. His stable runners have also collected a total of 9 Group 3 races as well as 32 Listed events.
Mr Gibson has campaigned horses extensively and successfully internationally including in the United States (Man O’War Stakes), Canada (Canadian International), Australia (Melbourne Cup), Dubai (Dubai World Cup), Japan (Japan Cup), Singapore (Singapore Cup) and Hong Kong as well as throughout Europe. Recently, he has campaigned MORES WELLS to win at Group 3 level in the 2010 Stockholm Cup in Sweden as well as finishing a close second to JOSHUA TREE in the 2010 Canadian International (Group 1) at Woodbine, Canada.
Mr Gibson currently trains from the historic Mont de Pô Stables which were formerly occupied by Champion French Trainer Francois Boutin. He has trained for many high profile and successful owners including His Highness the Aga Khan, Mr Charles Henri De Moussac, Mr Anthony Oppenheimer, the Sangster family, the Wildenstein family, Winstar Farm (USA) and Teruya Yoshida. Also included in his stable clientele are prominent Hong Kong owners including the Li Family and former Chairman Ronald Arculli.
