NEWITT RIDES IN MEMORY OF HIS FATHER
The Futurity was delayed for more than 20 minutes after Newitt was told by his mother and sister in the minutes leading up to the scheduled start, that his father had been killed in a car accident earlier in the day. After being assessed by two doctors and the Stewards, Newitt was cleared to ride second favourite Light Fantastic in honour of his father.
And for most of the Caulfield straight it seemed the racing gods would smile on Newitt and his family as the big grey surged past stablemate Alamosa and looked all over a winner, until Craig Williams on Niconero emerged to nail Light Fantastic right on the line.
In victory, Williams was first to spare a thought for his colleague.
“We’re a really close fraternity. We said Craig has to ride and he rode him perfectly. He didn’t make any mistakes but the best horse on the day won. Craig got the full support of all the jockeys,” said Williams.
