Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-G1) winner Big City Man (Northern Afleet), a four-time stakes winner in eight career starts, died Sunday from a strangulated cecum. The talented sprinter was training in Southern California, working six furlongs in 1:13 2/5 for Jeff Mullions on Sunday morning. He started showing signs of colic following the work and was sent to an emergency clinic.
"We treated him for colic after the work, but he never responded," Mullins told Blood-Horse. "We sent him to a clinic, and they got him on the table and opened him up. When they discovered the strangulated septum, they said there wasn't anything they could do for him. They told me it probably had something to do with his anatomy, and that it would eventually happen no matter what. It was tough."
Bred in Florida by Four Horsemen's Ranch, Big City Man dropped his first career start at Calder in 2007 but quickly graduated with a 10 3/4-length score over maiden special weight rivals in his second outing. The chestnut colt rounded out his juvenile campaign with convincing wins in the Criterium S. and the Dr. Fager division of the Florida Stallion S. for former conditioner Jose Pinchin. After being privately purchased by Prince Sultan Mohammed Saud al Kabeer and sent to the Middle East, Big City Man was sidelined more than a year, but he had not lost the winning habit.
Under the guidance of Jerry Barton, the four-year-old garnered an allowance at Nad al Sheba in his January reappearance and quickly followed up with a victory in the Al Shindagha Sprint (UAE-G3). His far-flung, five-race winning streak was snapped in the March 5 Mahab al Shimaal (UAE-G3), when he was just collared late by Gayego (Gilded Time), but he rebounded in style in the $2 million Golden Shaheen on March 28, denying a late thrust from two-time American champion filly Indian Blessing (Indian Charlie) to score by 1 1/4 lengths in the six-furlong event.
Out of the winning Mini Appeal (Valid Appeal), whose youngest offspring is an unnamed yearling colt by Trust N Luck, Big City Man was from the family of multiple Grade 2-winning sprinter Mr. Nickerson (Slewpy) and Grade 3 heroine Graeme Six (Graeme Hall).
He earned $1,521,505 from a 8-6-2-0 mark.
