The end is nigh for the great Silent Witness as owner Archie da Silva yesterday revealed the former world champion is struggling with a degenerative joint condition and is close to retirement.

The champ turned in one of his rare poor runs at Sha Tin on New Year's Day when a struggling seventh to stablemate Floral Pegasus in the Group Three Chinese Club Challenge Cup but required veterinary treatment the following day.

"This is a degenerative condition and there is no way to correct it," Da Silva said. "Silent Witness is a very heavy horse - his racing weight on Monday was 1,277 pounds - and because he's so gross it takes a lot of work to get him fit.

"All this constitutes wear and tear on the horse's joints and he's not a young horse any more, he's seven years old."

The Jockey Club's number one vet, Dr Brian Stewart, confirmed Silent Witness had been treated for inflammation and abrasions to his hind bumpers (the underside of the rear fetlock joints), which had become infected after the race.

"Basically, the support structure on his hind joints is not as strong as it formerly was and this is causing him to get down on his bumpers, and on a hard track that's causing him pain - that's why he didn't perform on Monday," Da Silva said.

亦因此漫延至球節骨, 如遇到比較硬既場地, 佢會感到疼痛, 呢樣就可以解釋到佢點解元旦日佢會跑得咁差
"Tony has spoken with the farrier and they will create a bar shoe, which will raise his heels and change the angle of the horse's hind pasterns.
告仔已經同釘蹄甲師傅講左幫佢重釘一個新既蹄甲俾佢, 咁佢可以提高佢既後腳跟, 從而改變佢既骹位既角度
"Hopefully, that will stop him getting down on his bumpers next time."
希望因此在下次競跑時, 個力唔會太著重落到去佢個球節骨度
Da Silva said Silent Witness' hind bumper problem had given him the secondary issue of back pain, with the horse apparently having put his back out as he tried to negate the pain from his rear legs.

"Other than that, Tony says the horse is fine," Da Silva said. "He was not sore in the front joints, as we thought he might be after having raced on that hard track."

Silent Witness will now embark on a familiar journey, the sprinters' triple crown races - a grand slam which he won in 2004 and in 2005. 精英大師而家將著手訓練以迎接一個佢2004及2005年贏過既賽事, 三冠短途錦標
But this time, expectations are more modest, with Team Witness merely hopeful of an honourable showing and, just maybe, a win if the new shoes work their magic.

"Tony loves the horse as much as we do and he doesn't want him to bow out on such a low note," Da Silva said.

"His next race will be in the Centenary Sprint Cup over 1,000 metres on February 4, and if he runs well in that he might run once more in the Chairman's Sprint Prize on March 4," he said.

"There are no plans beyond that. From this point on it's basically one race at a time, but it's very possible Silent Witness will retire after one of those two races."
在這之前, 係無其他計劃, 但係就因呢個問題, 精英大師將會極有可能, 在此兩場賽事或其中一場賽事之後退役
